Chapter 7 - THE BOX IN JOSEPHINE’S CLOSET
Josephine remembered a box Anna had given her before she died.
She had been three years old.
The memory came during therapy when the counselor asked whether her mother had ever given her a toy monkey.
“Mommy said it was for when I could fix things,” Josephine told me.
The box had remained in her old bedroom at Robert’s mansion because Margaret stored childhood belongings there.
We requested access.
Robert claimed no box existed.
A court-appointed inventory team searched the room.
The closet had been emptied.
Dust marks showed a rectangular container had recently sat on the highest shelf.
Margaret admitted moving it to the attic.
The attic contained nothing.
She then said Clara may have taken it.
Clara denied knowing about it.
Their stories separated.
Mara obtained text messages.
Margaret to Clara:
The child remembers Anna’s repair box.
Clara:
Then destroy the card before Bennett sees the serial list.
The message was not about the headless monkey.
A second artifact existed.
Josephine’s Christmas gift from me—a beginner’s repair kit—had disappeared during the dinner. I assumed we left it beside the tree.
Inside the kit was a handwritten card listing toys Anna once promised to teach Josephine to repair.
Silas recovered the wrapping paper from a trash bag the mansion cleaners had not yet removed.
The card was gone.
He found part of its envelope.
Anna’s handwriting appeared beneath my later message.
She had written the original list years earlier.
Number one:
Milo Master 001 — Josephine’s future vote.
The phrase made no sense as a toy instruction.
Mara searched corporate filings.
Anna had once owned a large block of Cole Heritage shares through a design partnership.
After her death, company records said the shares were sold back for a modest payment.
I remembered signing estate documents during grief.
I never saw the full valuation.
The buyback agreement carried my signature.
So did a second signature representing Josephine’s inherited interest.
Josephine had been three.
The listed representative was Robert.
He had signed away a child’s possible shares to his own company.

Before Mara could challenge it, Robert filed a petition claiming I was misusing Josephine in a corporate dispute and requested a guardian appointed over any inheritance investigation.
The proposed guardian was Clara.
