Chapter 16 - LIESL AT TEN

At ten, Liesl remembered the oxygen mask.

Not every detail.

She remembered:

the alarm,

Nolene’s face,

my hand,

the chair falling.

Memory simplified.

Maya told us that was normal.

She asked:

“Did Grandma want me dead?”

“No.”

Important.

“She wanted you discharged and tried to interfere with your treatment. That was dangerous.”

“Why?”

“She wanted money moved for Elliott.”

“So she chose him.”

I took time.

“She believed she could decide between children.”

“That’s choosing.”

“Yes.”

“But Elliott didn’t ask?”

“No.”

“Did he know?”

“No.”

She nodded.

That mattered.

Liesl and Elliott became friends.

Not inseparable.

Cousins.

They played games.

Argued.

At twelve Elliott joked:

“You almost paid for my heart.”

Liesl went quiet.

He immediately regretted it.

“I’m sorry.”

She said:

“Don’t joke about that.”

“Okay.”

Boundary.

No family explosion.

No adult intervention required.

They moved on.

That was generational improvement.
