Chapter 19 - I STEP BACK FROM THE MEDICAL MEETING

Poppy needed a pulmonary follow-up.

Laurel invited me.

Then changed her mind.

“I want to go alone.”

I said:

“Of course.”

Then:

“Do you want me in the waiting room?”

“No.”

“Driver?”

“No.”

“Call after?”

“Yes.”

That was all.

I hated it.

I spent the appointment walking around my office pretending to read reports.

At 11:43 Laurel called.

“Lungs sound good.”

I sat.

“Imaging?”

“Improving.”

“Oxygen?”

“Normal.”

“Activity?”

“Gradual.”

I asked six more questions.

Then stopped.

“How are you?”

She went quiet.

“Better.”

That answer mattered too.

Support is not waiting for someone to surrender the steering wheel.

Sometimes it is answering when they call afterward.
