Chapter 11 - POPPY GETS BETTER

Poppy spent three nights in the PICU.

Then two more on the pediatric floor.

Her pneumonia responded.

Oxygen requirement decreased gradually.

Mask to nasal cannula.

Then room air.

No miracle.

She coughed for weeks.

Got tired walking from bedroom to kitchen.

Needed follow-up.

No permanent lung injury identified.

The hospital did not tell us:

She almost died because Cole removed the mask.

They said:

The interruption was dangerous.

Brief.

Corrected rapidly.

No measurable lasting injury from that act.

I insisted everyone use that language.

My brother Vincent complained.

“He could have killed her.”

“Maybe if it continued.”

“It was oxygen.”

“I know.”

“Why defend him?”

“I’m not.”

Accuracy felt like defense to angry people.

That was our family’s disease.

We thought condemnation became weaker if it stayed precise.

It does not.

Cole removed medically necessary oxygen from a sick four-year-old to coerce a payment acknowledgment.

That was enough.
