Chapter 18 - THE $2,300 GETS PAID

Insurance processed the transport claim.

Patient responsibility:

$640.

Not $2,300.

The original number had been an estimate.

That fact became almost funny.

Almost.

Cole’s insurance plan covered most of it.

Laurel paid the $640 from her own account because the bill concerned Poppy and the temporary court order assigned current medical expenses proportionally pending later adjustment.

I offered.

She said no.

Cole’s lawyer later reimbursed his share through the parenting-account system.

No one signed my acknowledgment.

The famous $2,300 never existed as a final debt.

An estimated invoice had nearly become more important to Cole than oxygen.

Money is strange that way.

Sometimes the amount matters less than who bends.
