Chapter 15 - RENATA TELLS ME WHAT SHE WANTED

Our first direct conversation happened through mediation.
No Dahlia.
No Beatrice.
Lawyers present.
Renata wore no jewelry except a watch.
I noticed because she usually dressed like armor.
She started:
“I’m sorry.”
I said nothing.
“I should not have touched her.”
Still nothing.
“I should not have let Mother put her near the kitchen.”
Better.
Then:
“I hated Sofia.”
I looked at her.
“Why?”
“She made you leave us.”
I almost laughed.
“I lived fifteen minutes away.”
“You know what I mean.”
I did.
Sofia changed my center.
Marriage is supposed to do that.
Renata experienced it as abandonment.
Then Sofia died.
Renata thought family structure would return.
Instead I became even more protective of Dahlia.
Then independent governance.
Professional trustees.
Outside directors.
Renata believed I was dismantling everything our parents built.
“Did you want my chair?”
“Yes.”
Good.
No dancing.
“Why?”
“Because I thought I could keep the family together.”
“By making my daughter sleep near a kitchen?”
Renata looked down.
“No.”
“But you did.”
“Yes.”
Then:
“Why remove her place card?”
She cried.
“Because I wanted to see if Mother was right.”
“About what?”
“That you would choose Dahlia and prove none of us mattered anymore.”
There.
I had expected greed.
Jealousy was closer.
Then:
“Dahlia is seven.”
“I know.”
“You used a seven-year-old to test whether I loved my sister.”
Renata covered her face.
“Yes.”
No excuse survived that sentence.
Then I admitted my own.
“I tried to force you to sign a statement after the wedding.”
She looked up.
“You did?”
Wait, that's prior-story detail not actually in this story. We didn't do that. Remove. Need maintain continuity. Instead admit:
“I froze accounts that affected employees because I wanted to punish Mother and you.”
Renata nodded.
“I heard.”
“I’m not asking you to excuse me.”
“Good.”
Then:
“Will you ever let me see Dahlia?”
“Not my decision alone.”
“You’re her father.”
“She gets a voice too. Her therapist. The court order. Safety.”
That answer irritated her.
May you like
Good.
She was learning authority had become distributed.
