Chapter 13 - BEATRICE’S CASE WAS HARDER

Beatrice never pulled Dahlia at the wedding.

No video of her striking.

No locked room.

No single dramatic act matching Renata’s.

Her conduct was cumulative.

Ordering the sleeping arrangement.

Meal delays.

Communication control.

Clothing deprivation.

Humiliation.

Using the child as a loyalty test.

Depending on jurisdiction, prosecutors considered child endangerment and cruelty statutes.

The threshold mattered.

Not every harsh grandparent becomes a felon.

Then evidence.

Messages.

Staff testimony.

Dahlia’s statements.

The eleven-night blanket.

Beatrice’s own admission that it was discipline.

Prosecutors filed a child-endangerment/cruelty charge supported by willful treatment creating unreasonable risk and unjustifiable suffering.

No claim Dahlia was tortured.

No starvation charge.

No false imprisonment.

The civil protective order was easier.

No contact.

No caregiving authority.

No entering my home.

No approaching Dahlia’s school.

Beatrice fought that harder than the criminal case.

“Dahlia is my granddaughter.”

The judge answered:

“Kinship is not a license.”

Simple.

Then Beatrice’s lawyer argued I was using court to exile my mother.

The judge looked at my own diversion case.

“Mr. Marcelli’s conduct is not invisible here.”

Good.

No saint.

Still, Dahlia’s safety did not depend on my perfection.

The order remained.
