Chapter 6 - ROMAN’S ACCUSATION

I made my mistake at 11:30 that night.
Bianca was still in the estate guest wing after police interviews.
She could legally leave.
She chose not to because Dominic was crying and she wanted to say goodnight.
I saw her in the hallway.
Anger returned.
“You knew.”
She stopped.
“Knew what?”
“That Mother was planning this.”
“No.”
“You knew she wanted one of the babies.”
“Yes.”
“You let her put Matteo in your arms.”
“Yes.”
“You knew she was asking about bracelets.”
“I told you that.”
“After police asked.”
Her face tightened.
“What do you want, Roman?”
“The truth.”
“You want someone to punish before the lab calls.”
That hit.
I stepped closer.
She did not move.
Then I said:
“You helped her steal my son.”
Bianca went completely still.
No evidence supported that yet.
She had helped create a coercive scene.
She had not helped swap a child.
We did not even know a swap had occurred.
But the sentence left my mouth.
And Dominic heard it.
He stood at the top of the stairs.
A child in pajamas.
Bare feet.
Eyes enormous.
“Aunt Bianca stole Matteo?”
There.
My mistake became another person’s fear immediately.
I looked at him.
“No.”
“But you said—”
“I said something I do not know is true.”
Bianca’s eyes filled.
Good.
Let them.
I deserved the sight.
I crouched beside Dominic.
“I’m angry and I said too much.”
“Did she steal him?”
“We do not know that anybody stole him.”
“Then why mismatch?”
“We are waiting for tests.”
He started crying.
“Is Matteo gone?”
“No. The baby we have is safe with Mom.”
“That’s not same.”
No.
It wasn’t.
Bianca walked away.
I let her.
The next morning she left the estate.
She also resigned temporarily from the DeLuca Foundation board.
Not because I demanded it.
Because reporters had begun calling after a guest leaked the incident.
My accusation had reached two relatives before I corrected it privately.
Within hours, the story became:
Roman DeLuca says sister helped swap his baby.
I had said it in a hallway, not publicly.
That did not matter once family repeated it.
Bianca’s charitable work became contaminated by an allegation unsupported by evidence.
My lawyer said:
“Correct it.”
I issued one written family statement.
Not press.
There is no evidence at this time that Bianca participated in any infant-identity tampering or removal. She did participate in allowing Vivienne to use the baby in a family confrontation, which Bianca has acknowledged. I spoke beyond the evidence while angry.
No excuse.
Then I called Bianca.
She answered.
“I’m sorry.”
Silence.
Then:
“For what part?”
“Accusing you of stealing my son.”
“Do you still think I did?”
“I think you knew Mother wanted access she didn’t have.”
“Yes.”
“I think you wanted some of what she was promising.”
“Yes.”
“I do not have evidence you touched a band.”
“No.”
“I’m sorry.”
She breathed.
“Good.”
Not forgiveness.
Good.

Then the lab called.
Parentage results were ready.
