Chapter 20 - THE FIRST SAFE CHRISTMAS

Lily was eight when she asked for Christmas at Hart House.
I almost said no.
Then asked why.
“Big fireplace.”
Of course.
Not history.
Fireplace.
The trust permitted a private family gathering.
No corporate donors.
No Hart Heritage branding.
Daniel attended because Lily invited him.
Margaret did not.
Richard did not.
Lily was not ready.
She chose the chair herself.
Then looked at me.
“Can I sit here?”
The question broke me.
“You can sit in any safe chair at the table.”
She frowned.
“That’s too many words.”
Fair.
“Yes.”
She sat.
Dinner was messy.
Daniel burned rolls.
I forgot cranberry sauce.
Lily spilled milk.
No one moved her chair.
No one mentioned the wood.
After dinner she placed another handmade card on the table.
This one showed three people.
Me.
Daniel.
Her.
Divorce had changed the drawing.
Not ruined it.
She wrote:
