Chapter 16 - THE DIVORCE PETITION

I filed for divorce eleven months after Christmas.

Not immediately.

We tried counseling.

For Lily.

For ourselves.

For the possibility that a marriage can survive betrayal if truth becomes behavior.

Daniel made progress.

He apologized specifically.

He stopped defending Richard.

He provided every family document he had.

He attended parenting therapy.

He told Lily:

“I heard Grandpa say things that hurt you and didn’t stop him fast enough.”

Lily asked:

“Why?”

“Because I was scared of making Grandpa angry.”

“You’re bigger than Grandpa.”

Different child.

Same devastating logic.

Daniel nodded.

“I know.”

He became a safer father.

I still could not trust him as my husband.

That distinction took months to accept.

Our divorce was orderly.

Prenuptial agreement existed.

My trust interest remained separate.

Daniel’s Hart Heritage shares remained his.

Marital savings divided.

Townhouse equity divided.

No alimony.

Custody:

Primary residence with me initially.

Substantial parenting time with Daniel after evaluation.

Shared medical decisions.

Financial decisions involving Lily’s trust handled by independent fiduciary, not either parent.

That last part was my request.

I had no desire to become the next adult claiming love made me uniquely qualified to control her future.
