Chapter 19 - MARGARET’S APOLOGY

Margaret requested a meeting with me.

I refused twice.

Third time, I agreed.

Neutral office.

No Lily.

She brought no pearls.

No elegant armor.

She said:

“I hated your grandmother.”

“I know.”

“She saved us.”

“I know.”

“That was part of why.”

I understood more than I wanted.

“Gratitude felt like debt.”

“Yes.”

“So you decided debt entitled you to steal?”

She winced.

“We told ourselves the trust was unfair.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“No.”

She admitted helping prepare the ninety-nine-year lease.

Admitted knowing I had not personally approved the signature.

She claimed Richard said Daniel could obtain ratification later.

“Did you believe that was consent?”

“No.”

Specific.

“Why did you write the parcel number on Lily’s card?”

She closed her eyes.

“I was organizing documents at the table before dinner.”

“You used her card as scrap paper.”

“Yes.”

“Then watched Richard step on it.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you stop him?”

“I was angry at you.”

“She was five.”

“I know.”

No forgiveness arrived.

But truth did.

Margaret completed a civil settlement with the trust and Hart Heritage.

She repaid portions of disputed consulting payments.

No criminal fraud charge because prosecutors could not prove enough beyond her role in documents already attributed primarily to Richard.

Civil consequences were not nothing.

She asked:

“Can I ever see Lily?”

“Not because you’re her grandmother.”

She nodded.

“Because she wants to?”

May you like

“Yes.”

Years later, that distinction would matter.
