Chapter 14 - DANY AND THE FAMILY NAME

Dany turned four.

Small birthday.

Pizza.

Cupcakes.

A rented inflatable castle.

No Bennett estate.

No branch accounting.

Chelsea asked if her children could attend.

I hesitated.

Dr. Levin said:

“Assess the children, not the adults.”

Chelsea’s youngest, Emma, was six.

Older son Noah, eleven.

They had laughed at the picnic.

Children copy rooms.

We invited them with supervised adults.

Margaret not invited.

Chelsea attended only for drop-off and pickup.

Dany opened a toy fire truck from Emma.

“Mine?”

“Yes.”

“No trash?”

The room went silent.

My heart broke.

Emma looked confused.

“No. We bought it.”

Dany smiled.

“Okay.”

He had absorbed more than I wanted.

Afterward, I talked with Dr. Levin.

She said:

“You cannot make him forget. You can make new experiences less conditional.”

So we did.

Food appeared.

Children ate.

No one ranked plates.

No one said Bennett before love.

The trust approved a developmental account for Dany.

Preschool.

Medical.

Education later.

I refused an extravagant annual distribution proposed by an adviser.

“Why?”

“He’s four.”

The adviser smiled.

“Good.”

Money could wait.

Dany did not need a lifestyle identity.

He needed lunch.
