Chapter 21 - VANESSA’S LETTER
Vanessa wrote Lily when Lily was thirteen.
The no-contact order required the letter to go through counsel and Dr. Park.
Vanessa wrote:
I was jealous of a child.
That sentence made Lily stop.
She continued.
I told myself I was protecting Chloe. The truth is that I wanted Chloe to win because I had spent my life believing a mother’s worth could be measured by whether her daughter was chosen.
Grandma Evelyn compared me and Amelia when we modeled. Dad continued after Amelia died. I hated the system and then rebuilt it around you and Chloe.
None of that excuses what I did.
Lily read slowly.
Vanessa admitted the haircut was intended to delay the trust review.
She admitted she knew Lily did not consent.
She admitted the livestream was designed to create public evidence that the haircut belonged to a “challenge.”
She apologized for the injury.
Then she wrote:
You do not owe me forgiveness or contact.
Lily placed the letter down.
“Do I believe her?”
“That’s yours to decide.”
“She sounds different.”
“She has had years of treatment and consequences.”
“Does different mean safe?”
“Not automatically.”
Lily asked whether I forgave Vanessa.
“No.”
“Do you hate her?”
“Less actively than before.”
“What does that mean?”
“She does not organize my day anymore.”
Lily nodded.
“I don’t want to write back.”
“Then don’t.”
The letter entered her private archive.
Years later, she might change her mind.
No deadline.
Vanessa eventually left prison under supervised release.
She was barred from child-media management and fiduciary work.
She lived in a small apartment and worked in a nonfamily retail company.
She met Chloe through supervised visits that gradually became ordinary lunches after Chloe turned eighteen.
She did not meet Lily.
She did not request it again.
That restraint became part of her accountability.
Robert remained incarcerated longer.
His health declined.
He sent no apology to Lily.
He continued insisting the trust should have remained under family control.
Some people changed.
