Chapter 18 - CHLOE COMES BACK
Chloe was nine when she asked to see Lily again.
Two years had passed since the haircut.
She had continued therapy with Mark.
Vanessa remained incarcerated.
The cousins exchanged no direct messages during that time.
Chloe’s therapist sent a request.
Lily said no.
Six months later, Chloe asked again.
Lily said:
“Can she write first?”
The stored apology letter was outdated.
Chloe wrote a new one.
Lily,
I held your arms. Mom told me to, but I still did it. I was jealous because adults kept showing me numbers and pictures and saying you were taking things. I know now that you were not taking them. I am sorry. You do not have to see me.
Lily read it twice.
“Did she mean it?”
“I don’t know.”
“Do you?”
“I believe she has worked on understanding what happened. You still choose.”
Lily agreed to a twenty-minute meeting in Dr. Park’s office.
Chloe arrived without gifts.
Her hair was shoulder length.
No beauty styling.
No Morgan clothes.
She sat across from Lily.
“I’m sorry.”
Lily asked:
“Did you like holding me?”
Chloe began crying.
“At first I liked that Mom was proud of me.”
Lily looked away.
“That’s gross.”
“Yes.”
“Did you know she cut me?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know I was bleeding?”
“Not until after.”
“You laughed before.”
“Yes.”
Chloe did not defend herself.
Lily asked:
“Do you still think I’m prettier?”
Chloe shook her head.
“I think Mom made everything a contest.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
Chloe took a breath.
“Sometimes I think you’re prettier. Sometimes I think I am. Sometimes I don’t care.”
Lily almost smiled.
“That’s better.”
They did not hug.
They agreed to another meeting.
Months later, they played a board game.
Then argued over rules.
Dr. Park called the argument progress.
Ordinary conflict replaced symbolic competition.
Mark never forced cousin closeness because family healing looked good.
He also did not teach Chloe that shame should last forever.
She learned accountability could coexist with childhood.
Vanessa’s first approved therapeutic call with Chloe occurred after three years.
She apologized without mentioning Rachel, Lily’s money, or Robert.
“I used you.”
Chloe asked:
“Do you still want me to model?”
“No.”
“Good.”
Their relationship remained cautious.
Chloe loved her mother.
She did not return to Vanessa’s control.
When Vanessa later became eligible for supervised in-person contact, Chloe chose it.
