Chapter 1 - THE BRAID IN THE BAG

Lily lifted the pink bucket hat with both hands.

For one second, I did not understand what I was seeing.

Then my body went cold.

My six-year-old daughter’s hair had been hacked into uneven patches. Strands that had once reached halfway down her back now ended above one ear, below the other, and in ragged tufts across the crown of her head.

A narrow dried cut darkened the skin above her left ear.

“Lily…”

Her mouth trembled.

“Aunt Vanessa said my hair is so pretty it’s unfair to Chloe.”

The room tilted around me.

I dropped onto my knees.

“Did she cut it?”

Lily lowered her eyes.

I touched the side of her head with two fingers, careful not to disturb the cut.

She flinched.

That answered enough.

I looked toward the vanity.

A clear plastic bag lay beside the jewelry tray.

Inside it was Lily’s severed braid.

Still tied with the blue elastic I had put in her hair that morning.

I picked up the bag.

My hands started shaking.

Vanessa appeared in the doorway wearing an elegant cream blouse and heels. Her daughter Chloe stood behind her in a pastel dress.

Vanessa smiled until she saw my face.

Then irritation replaced sweetness.

“She got into the scissors. Kids do stupid things.”

“My six-year-old cut the back of her own head?”

“She was playing beauty salon.”

“With what?”

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Rachel, don’t turn everything into an investigation.”

I stood slowly, still holding the braid.

“Where are the scissors?”

“I threw them away.”

“Why?”

“They had hair all over them.”

Lily whispered behind me.

“Mommy…”

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“She’s being dramatic because she knows you reward it.”

Something inside me snapped.

I crossed the room.

My hand struck Vanessa across the face.

She stumbled backward and crashed onto the carpet beside the doorway.

Chloe screamed.

I looked down at Vanessa.

“My six-year-old would never cut her own hair.”

The satisfaction lasted less than a second.

Then I saw Chloe’s terrified face and understood what I had done.

Vanessa’s cruelty did not make my slap wise.

I had struck an adult in front of two children.

I would have to own that.

But first I needed to understand what happened to Lily.

Vanessa pushed herself upright.

“You’re insane.”

I turned toward the vanity.

A tablet rested beneath a stack of cosmetic palettes.

Its screen was awake.

A saved video was paused.

2:14 P.M.

The thumbnail showed Lily beneath two circular beauty lights.

Vanessa stood behind her.

Scissors gleamed in her hand.

I pressed play.

Lily sat in a white chair.

Her hands were pinned against the armrests.

Not by straps.

By Chloe.

My seven-year-old niece was standing behind the chair, gripping Lily’s wrists while Vanessa separated a section of hair.

Lily was crying.

“I don’t want it short.”

Vanessa smiled toward the camera.

“Hold her still, sweetheart.”

Chloe tightened her hands.

Vanessa cut.

The braid fell.

Lily screamed and jerked sideways.

The scissors nicked the skin above her ear.

Vanessa swore.

Then she laughed toward the livestream.

“Beauty requires sacrifice.”

My stomach turned.

Vanessa lunged from the floor.

“Give me that!”

I pulled the tablet against my chest.

The video continued.

A column of comments scrolled beside the image.

Hundreds of viewers.

Some laughing.

Some asking whether Lily’s mother knew.

Some calling it a prank.

One account had posted:

Finally Chloe gets what she deserves.

I stared at Vanessa.

“Why were you telling Chloe to hold Lily still?”

She stopped moving.

For the first time, fear entered her eyes.

Not fear of the police.

Not fear of me.

Fear of the tablet.

I looked at the video title.

MORGAN GIRLS — BALANCE RESTORED.

Below it was a monetization icon I recognized from the Morgan family’s media accounts.

Vanessa had not merely cut my daughter’s hair.

May you like

She had broadcast it.

And somewhere in the numbers beneath that livestream was the reason she had been willing to make a six-year-old bleed.
