Chapter 2 - THE FULL LIVESTREAM

I called the police before Vanessa could touch the tablet again.

She called my husband first.

Daniel Morgan answered her immediately.

I heard only Vanessa’s side.

“Rachel attacked me.”

Pause.

“No, Lily is fine.”

Pause.

“She cut her own hair and Rachel lost her mind.”

I lifted the tablet.

“Tell him I have the livestream.”

Vanessa turned away.

That told me more than her words.

Officer Maria Torres arrived with another patrol officer twenty minutes later.

By then Lily was sitting beside me on the sofa with a clean towel around her shoulders. I had not washed the cut because I wanted medical staff to see it first.

Chloe sat in the kitchen with Vanessa.

The officers separated everyone.

I admitted slapping Vanessa.

“Did she pose an immediate physical threat to you when you hit her?” Officer Torres asked.

“No.”

“Then understand that whatever happened to your daughter does not automatically make striking Ms. Morgan lawful.”

“I understand.”

I did.

The slap had expressed rage.

It had not protected Lily.

Officer Torres photographed Vanessa’s reddened cheek.

Then she watched the livestream.

Her expression changed before the first minute ended.

The recording lasted nineteen minutes.

It began with Vanessa telling viewers that Chloe had been “overshadowed for years by someone who didn’t earn the attention.”

Lily sat beside her, confused.

Vanessa praised Lily’s hair.

Then criticized it.

Too long.

Too dramatic.

Too attention-seeking.

Lily repeatedly asked when I was coming back.

Vanessa said:

“Your mother trusts me.”

At minute twelve, she produced scissors.

Lily tried to stand.

Vanessa ordered Chloe to keep her seated.

At minute fourteen, the braid came off.

At minute fifteen, the scissors cut Lily’s skin.

Vanessa ended the livestream three minutes later after blood appeared.

She never called me.

She never sought medical treatment.

Instead, she placed the braid inside a bag and told Lily to wear the bucket hat before I returned.

Officer Torres asked Vanessa:

“Why?”

“It was a family beauty challenge.”

“Did Rachel authorize it?”

“She leaves Lily with me all the time.”

“That is not the same question.”

Vanessa’s attorney arrived before she answered further.

An ambulance took Lily to urgent care.

The cut required skin adhesive rather than stitches.

No permanent physical injury was expected.

The physician documented tenderness where Vanessa had pulled sections of hair.

Lily also had faint finger-shaped marks around one wrist.

Chloe had held her harder than I realized.

Child protective services was notified because one child had been restrained by another under an adult’s direction.

No one treated Chloe as the primary offender.

She was seven.

She had followed an adult.

That did not mean her actions were harmless.

At the police station, I received a citation for misdemeanor battery.

Vanessa was arrested on suspicion of child assault, unlawful restraint, endangerment, and unauthorized commercial recording of a minor.

Exact charges would depend on review.

Daniel arrived after midnight.

He came directly to the hospital.

His face collapsed when he saw Lily’s hair.

“Oh my God.”

She turned away from him.

That hurt him.

He looked at me.

“Vanessa told me Lily cut it herself.”

“You believed her?”

“I didn’t know about the video.”

“She called you before police arrived.”

“She said you attacked her.”

“I did slap her.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Rachel…”

“Don’t start with me.”

“I’m not defending her.”

“You already did by believing her before asking what happened to your daughter.”

His shoulders lowered.

“You’re right.”

I had expected argument.

The quick agreement unsettled me.

Then Officer Torres entered.

“We need to discuss the livestream account.”

Daniel looked confused.

“What about it?”

“It was not streamed from Ms. Vanessa’s personal account.”

She turned the tablet toward us.

The account name read:

MORGAN LEGACY YOUTH MEDIA.

Daniel went completely still.

I knew Morgan Legacy existed.

It managed family charity events, children’s fashion campaigns, and educational sponsorships.

I had never authorized Lily to appear on its livestreams.

Officer Torres continued.

“The account earned money from today’s stream. We are preserving the payment records.”

“How much?” I asked.

“Unknown.”

Daniel looked at Vanessa’s tablet.

May you like

Then at Lily.

And for the first time that night, he looked afraid of something larger than his sister’s arrest.
