Chapter 9 - THE $36 MILLION WIRE

The refinancing bank was not a victim of magic.
It had lawyers.
Underwriters.
Auditors.
It also relied on documents provided by Vance Meridian.
One representation:
Mercer Trust consent valid.
Another:
No material related-party conflicts undisclosed.
Another:
All pledged collateral authorized.
The $36 million wire would go first into Vance Meridian operating accounts.
Then $11 million was scheduled for:
North Crest Development.
Who owned North Crest?
Public records showed a holding company.
Deeper records:
Arthur Vance — 44%.
Beatrice Vance — 11%.
Martin Kessler — 8%.
Outside investors — remainder.
Related party.
Disclosed?
Not fully.
North Crest claimed it had advanced land-development costs to Vance Meridian.
Some real.
Some questionable.
Another $7.5 million would repay:
Hart Advisory.
Chloe Hart?
No.
Different Hart.
Daniel Hart, unrelated.
Good.
Names can mislead.
Hart Advisory provided legitimate services, though fees were under review.
Another $9 million would satisfy a collateral call against an old Vance Meridian obligation.
Another $8.5 million working capital.
Not every dollar stolen.
The suspicious core was North Crest.
Arthur stood to receive indirect benefit.
More importantly, the Mercer Trust collateral was being used to support the whole facility.
Under a document I never signed.
That was why FBI intervention had to happen before the wire.
Once funds moved, recovery would be harder.
Not impossible.
Harder.
What had Julian done?
Emails.
He sent the forged consent to Martin Kessler.
Martin wrote:
Need Clara direct confirmation.
Julian:
Family office has authority.
Martin:
Bank wants owner confirmation.
Julian:
Arthur says proceed.
Then:
Martin:
If this blows up, I’m not taking the signature issue.
Julian:
It won’t. She’s pregnant and focused on baby.
That sentence hurt more than I expected.
Not because it was cruel.
Because it was accurate.
I had been focused on my baby.
Julian used ordinary pregnancy as camouflage.
Then another email:
Arthur:
Need succession contingency before Mercer child born.
Julian:
Chloe solves that if boy confirmed.
Arthur:
Only if Clara branch can be isolated.
There.
Chloe’s baby was not replacing mine emotionally.
He was part of a proposed financial workaround.
Still not fully explained.
The Vance family’s own trust held warrants and shares that could be reallocated among descendants.
If Julian had a son through Chloe, Arthur believed he could shift future family voting power toward that branch and reduce reliance on Clara’s child.
But my Mercer Trust was separate.
They could not take it.
Their goal was to isolate it after extracting the refinancing support.
One final use.
Then move future control toward Chloe’s son.
Julian’s cruelty in the ballroom was therefore partly ideological and partly financial.
“She is carrying the true future of my bloodline.”
He meant:
Chloe’s son would become the family’s chosen successor after they stripped my trust’s leverage away.
The problem?
They had not checked whether Chloe’s fetus was actually male through any verified report.
Julian said it was.
Chloe believed him because Beatrice told her a private genetic screen showed boy.
Hospital records later found no such screen.
Chloe had declined prenatal sex testing.
No one knew.
Julian built a succession plan around a fact he invented.
That would be funny if he had not nearly killed my daughter while saying it.
Then Martin Kessler began cooperating.
Why?
His encrypted drives contained backups.
He claimed Arthur ordered him to destroy them.
Instead he tried to leave with them.
Was that obstruction?
Yes.
Was he also preserving evidence?
Maybe.
His lawyer negotiated.
And he gave Morgan the document that finally explained everything.
