Chapter 17 - MARTIN KESSLER

Martin pleaded guilty to conspiracy and false certification charges.

His cooperation materially reduced sentence.

He admitted he knew the Mercer consent was questionable.

He still certified lender packages.

Why?

Arthur threatened to fire him.

He held stock.

He wanted the refinancing to succeed.

He told himself Clara had “probably approved.”

That word—

probably—

carried millions.

His encrypted drives contained:

Backups of altered spreadsheets.

Original North Crest ownership disclosures.

Emails Arthur wanted deleted.

Copies of Julian’s Project Succession.

Martin claimed he took them to protect himself.

Also obstruction by attempting to leave after the raid alert.

Both.

Cooperation after wrongdoing does not convert someone into hero.

The judge would consider it later.

His testimony against Arthur was detailed.

Defense pointed out he wanted leniency.

Jury knew.

Corroborating documents mattered more.
