Chapter 5 - THE VIDEO THEY WANTED
Jessica sought a protection order against me.
She wore a wrist brace to court and described the flying dishes as a deliberate attack.
Medical records showed no fracture. She had bruising from falling away from the overturned table.
I did not deny responsibility.
“I overturned it,” I testified. “I should have taken my children and left.”
Her lawyer played the edited clip.
Kate played Olivia’s full recording.
The judge watched Jessica remove the shrimp, heard her trash comment, saw Michael grip my arm, and still reminded me that provocation did not make breaking dishes safe.
The long-term protection order was denied.
The property-damage complaint remained under review.
Outside court, reporters shouted questions.
I made a mistake.
I told one of them, “The Carter family used my daughters’ hunger to steal their money.”
It was what I believed.
It was not yet fully proved.
Carter Coastal sued me for defamation before sunset.
Kate was furious.
“You handed them a public statement before we have the instruments.”
“I wanted people to know why.”
“Wanting the truth heard does not mean you get to skip proving it.”
The company’s lenders began asking questions.
Vendors shortened payment terms.
Employees blamed me for threatening their jobs.
Then an accounts-payable clerk named Hannah Cole contacted Kate.
She had seen transfers from the Mercer Capital Pool for years.
Birthday parties.
Jessica’s jewelry.
David’s boat.
Michael’s gambling debts listed as “market development.”
Hannah brought copies, not originals.
She also brought an email from Michael.
Release the reserve transfer. Emily’s consent will be regularized after dinner.
Michael had approved the $640,000 movement knowing I had not signed.
I confronted no one.
This time, I let Kate send it to investigators.
That night someone left two stainless-steel pet bowls outside the girls’ school.
Inside Olivia’s bowl was a note:
YOUR MOTHER IS COSTING PEOPLE THEIR DINNER.
The school increased security.
Police preserved the bowls.
No fingerprints identified the person who placed them.
Then Hannah stopped answering calls.
Her desk at Carter Coastal had been emptied.
Jessica announced that Hannah had confessed to stealing company records and fled.
Before disappearing, Hannah had scheduled one email to me.
