Chapter 3 - THE COMPLAINT FILED FIRST

Attorney Kate Lawson met us at her office before sunrise.

She specialized in business fraud and family trusts. Her first instruction was simple.

“Do not contact the Carters. Do not post online. Do not sign anything.”

I gave her Olivia’s paper, the bank records, and the dinner video.

By nine, Jessica had already posted an edited clip showing only the table overturning.

By ten, the Carter company issued a statement calling the incident a private mental-health crisis.

At eleven, child protective services arrived.

The complaint accused me of withholding food, drinking excessively, damaging property near my daughters, and threatening to make Michael’s parents homeless.

It had been filed at four that afternoon.

Three hours before dinner.

The investigator interviewed the girls separately.

Olivia described Jessica taking the shrimp away.

Megan remembered the cold broth and Michael standing in the doorway.

Both said I had fed them before we left home.

The children remained with me, but the case stayed open pending review.

Kate requested the documents connected to the restricted accounts.

Carter Coastal’s attorney refused.

He claimed the accounts belonged to a private family arrangement unrelated to me.

“Then why is her signature on the transfer?” Kate asked.

No answer.

Michael filed for temporary access to the girls that afternoon.

Attached was a sworn statement describing me as unstable around financial matters.

He claimed I had become obsessed with the idea that his family lived on my money.

A second attachment made my hands go cold.

It was a draft guardianship petition asking the court to give Michael control over the girls’ finances if I became “unavailable, impaired, or hostile to necessary family management.”

Created two days before dinner.

The banquet had been staged to produce proof.

Then Kate obtained the metadata from the emergency-authority page.

The document had been prepared by a company lawyer and revised by Jessica.

A note in the margin read:

If Emily refuses, use the dinner recording and proceed without her.

My daughters had not been denied food because Jessica lost her temper.

Their hunger was part of a legal plan.
