Chapter 4 - THE HOUSE MICHAEL LOCKED

The home Michael and I shared belonged to both of us.
That did not stop him changing the alarm code.
Kate obtained an emergency order preserving my access. A sheriff’s deputy accompanied me while I collected clothes, medication, school items, and the girls’ birth certificates.
Michael waited in the living room.
He looked sober and exhausted.
“I never wanted Mom to treat them like that.”
“You watched.”
“I froze.”
“You blocked the door.”
“I was trying to keep things from getting worse.”
“For whom?”
He had no answer.
In our study, several folders were missing.
The shared computer had been wiped the morning after dinner.
Michael claimed a software update caused it.
The forensic technician preserved the drive.
A locked drawer contained copies of loan documents.
Carter Coastal Foods was seeking an eight-million-dollar bridge loan.
Collateral included company warehouses, fishing contracts, Michael’s shares, and something called the Mercer Family Capital Pool.
My electronic signature appeared on a spousal consent.
Olivia and Megan were listed as contingent beneficiaries.
“What is the Mercer pool?” I asked.
Michael looked toward the deputy.
“Your mother invested in the company years ago.”
“I know she loaned your father money.”
“It was more complicated.”
“How complicated?”
“Ask Dad.”
I stepped closer.
“You signed a certification saying I approved this loan.”
“I believed you would.”
“That is not approval.”
“The company could collapse.”
“That still is not approval.”
He lowered his voice.
“Three hundred people depend on us.”
Us.
The word appeared whenever Michael needed my assets and disappeared whenever his family humiliated me.
As we left, Megan asked for her stuffed rabbit.
Michael went upstairs to find it.
Olivia opened the hall closet.
Inside were two packed suitcases containing the girls’ clothes.
Prepared before dinner.
Beneath them sat a sealed cardboard box marked:
EMILY — PERSONAL EFFECTS AFTER REMOVAL.
Michael returned holding the rabbit.
When he saw the box, his face changed.
“I didn’t pack that.”
“Who did?”
He stared at his mother’s handwriting.
Then the forensic technician called from the study.
The wiped computer had contained a calendar event.
