David survived.
He had been struck once behind the ear.
No evidence immediately identified the attacker.
The marina camera system had been disabled using Jessica’s credentials, but credentials alone did not prove who entered.
David’s office safe retained a document scan in its internal memory.

She provided $3.4 million in exchange for fifty-two percent of Carter Coastal’s economic rights and one special voting share controlling major debt, asset sales, and use of family capital.
She placed those rights in the Mercer-Carter Stewardship Trust.
I became primary beneficiary and successor voting trustee after her death.
When each daughter was born, protected units vested into separate subtrusts for education, healthcare, housing, and long-term security.
Neither Michael nor his parents could borrow against those units.
They could not transfer them.
They could not vote them through guardianship unless I died or a court found me permanently incapable after an independent proceeding.
The dinner plan had been designed to begin that proceeding.
First, forge my consent to move cash.
Second, provoke a violent public reaction.
Third, claim instability.
Fourth, place the girls under Michael’s temporary control.
Fifth, use the resulting confusion to close the bridge loan before the original schedule resurfaced.
The $640,000 transfer was only the latest withdrawal.
Over six years, David, Jessica, and Michael had diverted more than $2.7 million from the trust.
Some rescued payroll.
Some funded family luxuries.
