Chapter 9 - THE PRICE OF A LIE
Federal investigators sealed sections of Bennett Marine’s plant.
David was removed from direct control by the company’s outside board while records were preserved.
Eleanor called me for the first time since the backyard.
“Your father built that company.”
“Then David should stop burning its records.”
“You are destroying his legacy.”
“I am asking why our family received money after sailors died.”
Her silence lasted too long.
“You always chose the Navy over us,” she said.
“This is not about loyalty.”
“It is always about loyalty with you.”
The family’s defense shifted.
David admitted Bennett Marine made a component used in Navy diving equipment. He claimed all parts passed required tests.
Meridian Recovery, he said, had investigated a field failure and found no manufacturing defect.
The missing reports supposedly proved that.
NCIS found no engineer named Thomas Vale.
No laboratory.
No employees.
Meridian was a shell used to create an investigation that never occurred.
The concrete evidence remained incomplete.
A contract number.
Payments.
Burned records.
A damaged photograph.
No verified proof that Bennett Marine knew of a defect before the incident.
Clara vanished from protective housing.
Her advocate found the room empty and a note saying she had gone to help Javier surrender.
Police treated her as endangered, not automatically complicit.
I blamed myself for not recognizing she might return to him.
Melissa corrected me.
“You cannot supervise another adult’s fear every hour.”
That did not make the consequence smaller.
Leo received a message from Clara’s number.
COME TO GRANDPA’S WORKSHOP. I FOUND WHAT HE LEFT FOR YOU.
He showed me before responding.
The message used “Grandpa.”
Clara always called Raymond “Dad” when speaking to the children.
We gave the phone to police.
Officers searched the workshop.
No one was there.
Beneath the torn floorboards they found fresh blood and one of Clara’s earrings.
Javier had returned.
He wanted Leo badly enough to use Clara as bait.
Then NCIS called.
A bank vault had been discovered through Raymond’s marina records.
Inside was the gray cabinet.
Someone had replaced the cabinet Javier took with an empty duplicate.
Raymond had moved the real one before his death.
Its lock required the blue brass tag.
