Chapter 8 - THE COMPANY THAT VANISHED

Meridian Recovery Systems had existed for only eighteen months.

Its registered address was a mailbox.

Its owner was listed as Thomas Vale, a man who died before the company was formed.

Bennett Marine paid Meridian nearly nine hundred thousand dollars for “field failure analysis.”

No reports accompanied the invoices.

The payments began two weeks after my mission.

They stopped when Meridian dissolved.

David approved every transfer.

Eleanor co-signed two.

Javier did not work for the family then.

Clara insisted she had never seen the company name until copying the files.

Melissa sent the records to federal investigators because possible military contracting was now involved.

Two agents from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service met me privately.

They asked about my service history.

I confirmed only what they could verify independently.

Twenty-three years.

Operational assignments.

Medical retirement.

Injuries during a maritime incident thirteen years earlier.

I did not describe the unit’s work in front of my children.

One agent, Paul Mercer, asked whether Bennett Marine supplied equipment connected to the incident.

“Not that I knew.”

“Did you ever ask?”

“My family said they made commercial components.”

That answer sounded naive when spoken aloud.

The agents had found Bennett Marine’s name in an archived subcontract file.

Not as the primary supplier.

As the manufacturer of one internal component.

They would not identify it until records were verified.

The secret was tightening around the worst day of my life.

Javier disappeared before prosecutors could question him about Leo’s assault and the warehouse fire.

His truck was found near the state line.

Clara claimed not to know where he went.

Her bank records showed a cash withdrawal the morning he vanished.

She said he forced her to make it.

Detective Price did not accept the claim without proof.

Neither did I.

Leo overheard part of the conversation.

“Is Uncle Javier running because of Grandpa?”

“Possibly.”

“Because of you?”

“I don’t know.”

That was the most honest answer I had.

Then NCIS recovered a partial technical file from the shredded strips beneath the testing chamber.

The header carried a Navy contract number.

Below it were three words:

PRESSURE VALVE DEVIATION.

The model number had been cut away.

I recognized the contract prefix.

It belonged to the equipment my team carried the night two people died.
