Chapter 6 - THE MAN WHO CHANGED HIS STORY

The blue fragment went directly to police.

No fingerprints survived.

A laboratory confirmed it came from painted brass similar to the tag Leo described. It did not prove it was the same object.

The warehouse fire investigator found an electrical fault near the archive-room wall.

He also found traces of an accelerant beneath a collapsed shelf.

The final cause remained undetermined while testing continued.

David insisted old records were replaceable from digital backups.

Bennett Marine’s outside accountant disagreed.

Several years of quality-control attachments existed only on paper.

“Quality control for what?” I asked.

Melissa shook her head.

“We do not know yet.”

The employee who saw Javier was named Owen Park.

He refused to speak until Detective Price showed him the original written statement bearing his signature.

Owen admitted Javier pressured him.

“He said my immigration sponsorship could disappear.”

“What did you see?”

“Javier carrying a gray case from the archive room.”

The case matched the dimensions of the cabinet removed from Raymond’s marina locker.

Owen saw him place it in David’s truck.

David claimed Owen was retaliating over a disciplinary warning.

Payroll records showed no warning until after the fire.

The counterattack came through family court.

Javier and Clara petitioned for a protective order against me, alleging I had used military training to assault Javier after Leo trespassed.

They requested restrictions preventing me from carrying weapons around family members.

I owned no personal firearm.

The petition still painted me as dangerous.

At the hearing, the video from Eleanor’s backyard became central.

Mia had accidentally started recording while trying to call me.

The clip showed Javier’s knee on Leo, Mia being shoved, my command, Javier’s first punch, and my controlled restraint.

The judge denied their order.

He referred Javier’s conduct back to prosecutors.

Outside court, Clara whispered, “I’m sorry.”

I did not answer.

An apology without changed behavior could become another way of asking the victim to carry discomfort.

That evening Leo found something inside the lining of his old fishing cap.

Raymond had sewn it there during their last marina trip.

A thin plastic card.

No writing on the front.

On the back, a magnetic strip and one sentence:

FOR THE ROOM BELOW THE WATERLINE.

The marina had no underwater room.

Bennett Marine did.
