Chapter 5 - CLARA’S WARNING

Hotel cameras showed a man in a maintenance uniform entering our room with a master key.

His cap hid his face.

The hotel identified the uniform as stolen from a laundry cart.

No arrest followed.

David’s attorney suggested I staged the break-in to create sympathy.

Melissa warned me against responding publicly.

“Your brother wants you angry and visible.”

I knew the pattern.

Force someone to react.

Use the reaction as proof.

Clara contacted me again.

This time she agreed to meet in a church parking lot during daylight.

She looked exhausted.

“Javier watches the accounts and my phone.”

“Then leave him.”

“It isn’t that simple.”

“It became simple when he knelt on Leo.”

She flinched.

Clara admitted David and Javier had removed a cabinet from Raymond’s marina locker. They brought it to the plant after midnight.

“What was inside?”

“They never opened it.”

“Where is it now?”

“I don’t know.”

She told me Raymond had accused David of altering old production records shortly before his death.

David called him confused.

Eleanor sided with David.

Clara believed the dispute concerned taxes.

“Why did you tell me it connected to my injury?”

“I didn’t.”

“Dad did.”

Her face changed.

For one second, she knew exactly what I meant.

Then she denied it.

I made a mistake.

I showed her a copy of Raymond’s voicemail transcript.

Clara read the line about where I was hurt.

She began crying.

“I have to go.”

By evening David’s attorney demanded the original voicemail for “authentication.”

Only Clara knew we had it.

I had trusted fear to produce honesty.

Instead, she carried the clue straight back to them.

The next morning Bennett Marine reported a warehouse fire.

It was contained to an archive room.

No one was injured.

David told reporters the loss included decades of paper production records.

Detective Price called me.

“The fire alarm was disabled for twelve minutes.”

“Accident?”

“Too early to say.”

An employee had seen Javier leaving the archive corridor moments before smoke appeared.

The same employee later withdrew his statement.

Then a package arrived at Melissa’s office.

Inside was a melted piece of blue enamel.
