Chapter 5 - MY FAILURE

I wanted to make Heloise the entire story.

That would have been easier.

Then Naomi asked:

“Who left Thora with her?”

I looked at her.

“Me.”

“Did you have a caregiver agreement?”

“No.”

“Written schedule?”

“No.”

“Independent nanny?”

“She had one.”

“What happened?”

“Her nanny’s mother became ill. She left temporarily before my trip.”

“And you went anyway.”

There it was.

My failure.

I had a major acquisition negotiation.

I told myself twenty-three days was not long.

Heloise offered to keep Thora.

Family.

Safe.

Large house.

Staff.

My niece there too.

I accepted because the alternative was delaying work or hiring someone new quickly.

I called every day.

I asked:

“Did you eat?”

“Yes.

“School good?”

“Yes.”

“Is Aunt Heloise nice?”

Mostly Thora nodded.

Once she said:

“Sometimes.”

I laughed.

I told her:

“Listen to your aunt.”

That sentence haunted me.

I had not caused abuse.

I had made access easier through negligence.

Both could be true.

Thora’s counselor advised me not to flood her with apologies.

So I said one specific thing.

“I should have checked more carefully while I was away.”

She looked at me.

“You called.”

“I did.”

“Heloise stood there.”

“What?”

“When we talked.”

My stomach turned.

“Every time?”

“Most.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“She said you would lose work.”

Of course.

Heloise used my biggest weakness.

Responsibility.

She knew I had spent years trying to keep my company separate from the family estate.

She told Thora:

Daddy needs his work.

Don’t upset him.

Then she controlled what my daughter said.

I asked:

“Did she ever threaten you?”

“No.”

“Then why did you listen?”

Thora hugged her rabbit.

“She said you asked her to teach me.”

I nearly broke.

She believed I approved.

That evening, I called St. Catherine’s School.

Teachers had noticed changes.

Tiredness.

A missing cardigan.

One lunch with almost nothing inside.

Why didn’t they call?

They did.

Emergency contact:

Heloise.

My office number had been removed from the parent portal.

By whom?

A login associated with the home administrator account.

Heloise had helped set it up years earlier.

Again.

No hacking fantasy.

Access I had voluntarily given.

Used against me.

The school immediately restored my credentials.

Then the headteacher told me:

“Thora brought something to class last week.”

“What?”

“A note.”

Written with kindergarten spelling:

DAD PLS COME HOME.

Teacher photographed it because she was concerned.

She gave the original to Heloise at pickup.

Heloise never told me.

I stared at the photo until the letters blurred.

My daughter had tried to ask for help.

The system delivered the message directly to the person she needed help from.
