Chapter 24 - HELOISE’S LAST YEARS

Heloise changed.

Not completely.

Nobody does.

She remained controlling about schedules.

Still liked expensive dresses.

Still believed table settings mattered too much.

But she never again held family stewardship.

Never supervised Thora.

Never controlled staff.

Her relationship with her daughter improved gradually.

With me:

Christmas cards.

Occasional phone calls after our father’s memorial dates.

No restored sibling closeness.

Some breaks heal into distance.

That can be healthy.

She died at seventy-six after complications from heart disease.

No mystery.

No hidden will.

No final conspiracy.

Her lawful estate paid remaining obligations first.

Then assets passed according to her plan.

Her daughter received most.

Thora received one thing:

A small wooden chair from the Wycliffe nursery.

With a letter.

I did not read it.

Thora did.

She later told me one sentence.

I made you stand because I needed to feel above you. I am ashamed that a child had to teach me how small that made me.

Thora kept the chair.

Not the letter.

May you like

Paper eventually went into the fireplace.

Her choice.
