Chapter 12 - THE CHILD-ENDANGERMENT CASE

Heloise’s criminal case did not include trust fraud at first.
It focused on Thora.
The video showed:
Thora attempting to sit.
Heloise yanking her up.
The slap.
The tray.
Her words:
“Servants don’t sit with family.”
Other recordings from the house supported the sleeping arrangement.
Kitchen service camera:
Thora carrying plates.
Thora being ordered to remain after dinner.
Thora lying under the torn blanket.
Not every night.
Seven documented nights over twenty-three days.
Enough.
Food records:
No evidence of severe starvation.
She ate.
But meals were delayed and sometimes reduced as discipline.
Neglectful.
Humiliating.
Potentially dangerous.
The prosecutor charged:
Child assault.
Child endangerment.
Neglect-related conduct.
No trafficking.
No slavery charge.
No kidnapping.
People online used those words.
Law did not.
Heloise testified.
“She was doing chores.”
“At five?”
“Children can help.”
“Yes. Why a maid uniform?”
“Consequences.”
“Why sleep by the kitchen?”
“She repeatedly broke house rules.”
“Why not her bedroom?”
“To teach responsibility.”
Then the prosecutor played:
Servants don’t sit with family.
Heloise looked down.
The jury convicted on assault and endangerment.
One neglect count requiring a higher threshold of deprivation ended in acquittal.
Correct.
Thora had not been medically starved.
Words matter.
Sentence:
Custodial term partly suspended.
Probation.
Child-safety treatment.
No unsupervised contact with Thora.
No role supervising minors during probation.
My punch case had already resolved separately.
I did not get to stand outside court as the flawless father whose fist represented justice.
Good.
Thora deserved better than that story.
At sentencing I said only:
“My daughter believed family membership could be taken away by hunger, work, and where she slept. I want the court to understand that harm even though she physically recovered.”
Then I left.
Thora was at school.
Her class was making paper planets.
She had chosen Saturn.
No servant uniform.
May you like
No tray.
Normal.
