Chapter 21 - KERENSA CHOOSES A CAMERA

At seven, Kerensa asked for a camera.
I said no too quickly.
She frowned.
“Why?”
I heard myself.
Because cameras are dangerous.
Wrong.
“What kind?”
“A purple one.”
Toy digital camera.
She wanted to photograph bugs.
I bought it.
Not expensive.
Purple.
Terrible image quality.
She photographed:
Carpet.
Shoes.
Half a squirrel.
My nose from three inches away.
Every picture was hers.
Then one day:
“Can I make video?”
My body tightened.
“What kind?”
“Bug movie.”
“Who watches?”
“You.”
“Anyone else?”
“No.”
“Okay.”
She filmed an ant for four minutes.
No plot.
Masterpiece.
Then:
“Can I stop?”
I nearly cried.
“Yes.”
She switched it off.
May you like
Choice.
That was the entire point.
