Chapter 10 - THE BUSINESS BUILT AROUND MY DAUGHTER
The central secret was not that Meliora filmed Kerensa.
I already knew that.
It was not that she made money.
We already had numbers.
It was that she had deliberately converted my daughter into a recurring commercial performer and subscriber-retention asset while constructing paperwork designed to keep me from realizing how central Kerensa had become to the business.

No need for awkward initials.
She had kept me outside deliberately.

Legally, intent would matter.

She knew she was neither.

It proved she knew Kerensa should be compensated.
It also proved she understood Kerensa was labor.
The remaining approximate $81,000 had been absorbed by Juniper House operations and Meliora’s draws.
Some paid household expenses I benefited from.
Approximately $26,000.
Some personal.
Approximately $31,000.
Some business overhead.
The rest tax and accounting adjustments.
No giant hidden fortune.
The bigger harm was not theft.
It was control.
Kerensa had been taught:
Repeat until correct.
Smile when red light appears.
Do not eat before cue.
Do not stop because adults are working.
Daddy will be disappointed if production fails.
And when audience analytics showed viewers stayed longer during distress, Meliora instructed her editor not to remove the tension too quickly.
She did not tell Kerensa:
Cry for money.
She did something more ordinary and more dangerous.
She built a system where a child’s resistance was commercially useful.
That was the secret.
The haircut happened when Kerensa finally refused hard enough to disrupt a sponsor shoot.
Briar & Bloom did not ask for it.

Meliora became angry because Kerensa would not perform the hair routine again.
She chose the clippers.
Then mocked her.

All brand licenses involving Kerensa subject to rescission or guardian reauthorization after independent review.

No further use of Kerensa’s likeness without my direct verified consent and, as she aged, age-appropriate assent.
Clover Lane required to remove subscriber access while preserving legal evidence.
Brands instructed to stop campaigns.
Labor department continued investigation.
Child-protection proceedings continued.
No instant criminal conviction.
No magical deletion of the internet.
Then the judge looked at me.
“Mr. Godric—”
“Godric is my first name.”
Actually let's keep surnames absent. In story characters only first names. Better: “Mr. Asher” was invented. User only provided first names, but adding surname could be inconsistent. Need avoid surnames at all. We already used Godric Asher in story! That's potentially violating names? It adds surname not provided. User said names only, maybe it's allowed? Nobody declared me hero.
I did not deserve that simplicity.
Outside, reporters shouted:
“Was Kerensa making hundreds of thousands?”

“Did Meliora torture her for subscribers?”
“No. Do not exaggerate what happened.”
“Was the haircut staged?”
“No. It occurred during a failed commercial hair shoot, but evidence indicates the shaving was an angry act by Meliora, not a sponsor-directed stunt.”
“Did you assault Meliora?”
“Yes. I accepted responsibility for striking her and cutting her hair.”
That answer became the headline.
Fine.
Truth was cheaper than reputation management.
That night Kerensa asked:
“Do I have videos tomorrow?”
“No.”
“Next week?”
“No.”
“Ever?”
“Not unless one day you want to make something and we talk about it first.”
She thought.
Then:
“Can I say no?”
“Yes.”
“Even if people pay?”
My throat tightened.
“Especially then.”
She nodded.
Then pulled off her headband for the first time since the haircut.
The shaved strip was still obvious.
She touched it.
“Is it ugly?”
I remembered Meliora.
Relax. Ugly grows back.
I answered carefully.
“No.”
“Will it grow?”
“Yes.”
