Chapter 26 - LILY’S KITCHEN

Lily became a mother at thirty-one.
Her daughter, Sophie, was five when she refused dinner one night.
Lily called me laughing.
“What did you cook?”
“Chicken.”
“What’s wrong with it?”
“Apparently it looks sad.”
From the background Sophie shouted:
“It does!”
Lily whispered:
“My first instinct was panic.”
“Why?”
“She pushed the plate away and I heard Grandma.”
“What did you do?”
“Told her she could have yogurt and fruit.”
“Did she?”
“Yes.”
“Then?”
“Asked for chocolate.”
“And?”
“I said no.”
“Good.”
Lily laughed.
“Normal rules are weirdly comforting.”
Yes.
The next time Sophie disliked dinner, nobody thought about branches.
