Chapter 15 - ROBERT ON THE STAND
Robert’s trial centered on concealment.
Not Michael’s death.
No suspicious death theory.
Not Helen’s child cruelty.
Documents.
Notice.
Conflict.
The prosecutor asked:
“Did you know Sarah had not been contacted directly about annual branch status?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know Michael’s branch would likely activate if she received independent notice?”
“Yes.”
“Why direct Meridian Advisory to avoid re-notice until restaurant strategy resolved?”
Robert looked at the jury.
“To avoid instability.”
“Whose instability?”
“The company’s.”
“Did the independent board later obtain a twenty-million-dollar-higher sale price after Lily’s branch activated?”
Objection.
Argumentative.
Sustained.
The point remained in evidence elsewhere.
Robert’s defense argued he believed the initial waiver valid.
Maybe he did at first.
Later concealment was harder.
The jury convicted him of fiduciary fraud, beneficiary-notice obstruction, and one related-party nondisclosure count.
He was acquitted of conspiracy to forge my signature.
Correct.
No evidence proved he participated in creating it.
Helen’s conduct remained hers.
Robert received custody, restitution, probation afterward, and permanent fiduciary disqualification.
His age affected placement.
So did breach of trust.
At sentencing he said:
“I believed preserving consolidated control protected Hearthline.”
The judge answered:
“Your father created the trust because he believed otherwise.”
Robert had no reply.
That evening Lily asked:
“Is Grandpa bad?”
I thought carefully.
“He made serious dishonest choices.”
“Did he love me?”
“I think he did.”
“Can both?”
“Yes.”
She frowned.
