Chapter 25 - HELEN’S LAST THANKSGIVING

Helen was eighty-three when Lily invited her to Thanksgiving.

Her choice.

Not mine.

Conditions:

No business talk.

No trust talk.

No comments about food.

Helen agreed.

She brought rolls.

Overbaked.

Ethan looked at Lily.

Lily looked at him.

Both started laughing.

Helen knew why.

“I deserve that.”

Lily shook her head.

“No. They’re just burnt rolls.”

Helen stopped.

Something passed across her face.

Relief?

Grief?

Maybe both.

Dinner continued.

When dessert arrived, Helen asked Lily:

“Would you like pie?”

“Yes.”

“What kind?”

“Apple.”

Helen served her first.

Lily noticed.

“Don’t make it weird.”

Helen almost smiled.

“Right.”

One slice.

No hierarchy.

No redemption speech.

Just pie.

Helen died nine months later after pneumonia.

May you like

Lily cried.

That was allowed too.
