Chapter 5 - THE FIRST RESTRAINING ORDER
Lenora asked for a protective order.
Not because Sterling had hit her once.
Because when she imagined leaving the hospital, she whispered:
“He’ll come get me.”
Elaine filed.
Temporary order granted after review.
No contact.
No access to her temporary residence.
No intimidation through relatives.
Sterling could communicate only through counsel on financial/legal necessities.
He was not immediately banned from his own company.
Separate systems.
But Kensington’s board placed him on temporary administrative leave pending internal investigation because the refinancing coercion involved corporate documents.
That was not a criminal finding.
Governance risk.
Interim CEO:
Helena Ross.
Chief operating officer for eleven years.
Not family.
Employees kept working.
Hotels stayed open.
No guests thrown out because the chairman hit his wife.
Good.
The board froze Harbor Vale guarantee review.
Not the whole company.
Coraline remained director but recused from Harbor Vale matters under independent counsel’s demand.
She hated it.
Then Thatcher came after me legally.
Petition:
Exclusive possession of our newly leased marital penthouse suite? Wait luxury penthouse was family penthouse, not ours maybe. Let's clarify: wedding night gathering at Kensington family penthouse, not our residence. Thatcher and Kalista had their own condo. He sought return of personal property and temporary no-contact because of finger injuries.
Reasonable.
I agreed to no direct contact.
We had no children.
No custody issue.
Thank God.
Our marriage could be unwound without using a child as leverage.
I filed for annulment/divorce depending state grounds.
Fraud? Not necessarily legal fraud.
We pursued divorce.
No dramatic instant annulment.
My wedding gifts stayed boxed.
Dress at dry cleaner? No. I kept it in garment bag with blood stains documented before cleaning. Police photographed.
Then prosecutor reviewed my finger-break incident.
Video?
The penthouse had interior security.
Sterling disabled audio in living room for privacy.
Video existed.
No sound.
It showed:
Me kneeling by Lenora.
Thatcher grabbing my wrist.
Pulling me backward.
Me struggling.
Thatcher slapping me.
Pointing finger close.
Me taking his hand.
Twisting.
Him collapsing.
Strong self-defense context.
But after the slap, was immediate threat continuing?
His finger and body posture maybe.
Prosecutor considered.
My action lasted under two seconds.
I released immediately.
No follow-up.
No kicks.
No weapon.
The fracture severity was high but mechanism defensive.
Decision deferred.
I accepted.
Then Sterling’s criminal case.
Domestic assault causing head injury.
Witnesses conflicting.
My statement.
Lenora.
Medical evidence.
Video lacked audio but captured motion.
Yes.
The camera showed Sterling striking.
No question.
Coraline’s first denial became untenable.
She revised again.
“I saw Sterling hit Lenora.”
Why lie?
“Shock.”
Maybe.
Or loyalty.
Then video showed something else.
Before the strike:
Sterling held a pen.
Lenora pushed paper away.
Coraline retrieved it.
Thatcher placed it back in front of Lenora.
Then Sterling hit her.
Corporate coercion no longer inference from timing alone.
The signature demand was visible.
Then Sterling’s lawyer offered explanation:
The family was arguing over refinancing.
Lenora became emotional.
Sterling struck her in anger.
He denied assault was intended to procure signature.
Difference mattered for additional charges.
Could be domestic assault, not extortion/coercion.
Prosecutors investigated.
Then Lenora’s hospital bag yielded something.
A flash drive.
She had carried it to the wedding.
Why?
“I planned to give it to Kalista.”
Me.
I stared.
“Why me?”
She looked ashamed.
“Because you were new.”
That made no sense.
Then:
“Because Thatcher loved you.”
I almost laughed.
“He slapped me.”
“I know that now.”
“What’s on it?”
She would not say.
Not yet.
Only:
“I thought if you knew, Thatcher might finally choose differently.”
Her plan had failed before she could hand it over.
