Chapter 14 - THE MEDICAL RECORDS
Lenora had eleven suspicious medical visits across twenty years.
Could prosecution introduce all?
No.
Rules limited prior acts.
Specific corroboration required.
Three incidents had independent support.
Housekeeper.
Neighbor.
Photographs.
Texts.
Others remained her account.
Trial court allowed certain pattern evidence tied to coercion motive.
Not every bruise.
Good.
Sterling’s defense attacked Lenora:
Why stay?
Why sign?
Why travel with him?
Why smile at galas?
Why not call police?
Questions survivors hear.
Lenora answered:
“Because the morning after he hurt me, he could be kind.”
Then:
“Because leaving meant losing my children, house, company, and every person who told me I was overreacting.”
Then:
“Because signatures end arguments faster than resistance.”
That sentence mattered.
Defense:
“So you signed voluntarily to stop conflict.”
Lenora:
“No. Choosing the option that ends a threat is not the same as wanting the transaction.”
Legal voluntariness would be for jury/court.
Human meaning clear.
Then Coraline was subpoenaed.
She fought.
Lost.
She would have to testify.
Her own exposure on coercion conspiracy remained.
Prosecutors had not charged yet.
Could immunity be offered?
They gave limited use immunity for specific testimony? Maybe too legal. Better no immunity; she invoked rights on some questions, answered others under compulsion? That can be messy. We'll simplify: she negotiated a cooperation agreement on obstruction/false statement, not assault conspiracy.
She admitted lying in first police statement.
Why?
“To protect Sterling.”
Charged with false statement/obstruction misdemeanor? Could be.
She accepted plea later.
No prison maybe probation.
Then she admitted text:
Get Lenora’s signature tonight.
Did she expect violence?
“No.”
Did she know Sterling had hit Lenora before?
Long pause.
“Yes.”
There.
“Then what did you expect when you told him to get the signature?”
“I expected him to pressure her.”
“What kind?”

That was perhaps the most honest thing Coraline ever said.
