Chapter 4 - THE WIFE WHO CALLED IT CARE
Gwendolyn filed for an emergency protective order against me.
Her petition described the slap accurately, then surrounded it with lies.
She said I had become obsessed with my mother’s property.
She said Florence feared me.
She claimed I staged the dirty-water scene after breaking into a private caregiving session.
The video contradicted much of that.
It did not erase my hand striking her face.
The judge issued temporary no-contact terms while reviewing the evidence. I could not approach Gwendolyn except through attorneys.
I accepted the restriction.
At the hearing, my recording played from the moment the door opened.
Gwendolyn’s voice filled the courtroom.
Does the mop water taste good?
Florence’s plea followed.
Please… I’m cold.
Gwendolyn’s attorney argued the pitcher contained diluted cleaning water accidentally brought from the bathroom.
The laboratory later found detergent and floor disinfectant.
No amount was safe to force into an elderly woman’s mouth.
The long-term order against me was denied, but the prosecutor offered diversion for misdemeanor battery.
Anger-management classes.
Community service.
Dismissal after completion.
Claire advised acceptance.
A trial could produce acquittal or conviction. The evidence showed Gwendolyn abusing Florence, but I had struck her after entering, not while she was actively holding the pitcher to Mom’s mouth.
I accepted.
Responsibility for my action did not reduce hers.
Gwendolyn’s company, Gentle Path Senior Support, issued a statement describing her as a caregiver falsely accused during a family property dispute.
She had founded Gentle Path four years earlier to advise families caring for aging relatives.
I had helped finance the first office.
Her business now appeared throughout Florence’s records.
Care assessments.
Medication schedules.
Invoices.
A “behavior management plan” I had never seen.
The plan described Mom as combative, paranoid, and prone to fabricating abuse allegations.
It was signed by Dr. Alan Price.
Dr. Price worked at a private memory clinic and had evaluated Florence once, by video, for eighteen minutes.
He denied approving confinement or dirty-water punishment.
His report contained language that did not appear in his clinic copy.
Someone had expanded it after he signed.
The altered version supported an emergency guardianship petition naming Gwendolyn as Florence’s temporary guardian.
The petition had been prepared before my project trip.
It had not yet been filed.
At the bottom, one note appeared in Vincent Hale’s handwriting:
FILE ONLY IF LUCAS RETURNS BEFORE CLOSING.

They had planned for the possibility that I would see Mom.
They had also planned a legal story to explain what I found.
