Chapter 19 - FLORENCE SPEAKS

Florence gave her age, address, and the history of Maple Hollow.

She forgot the exact year Dad created the trust.

She said so.

She remembered why.

“Henry watched our neighbor lose her house after her nephew got a guardianship. He said age should not make a signature easier to steal.”

The prosecutor asked when Gwendolyn took control of her medication.

“After pneumonia.”

“Did you agree?”

“At first.”

“Why?”

“I was tired. Lucas was busy. Gwendolyn sounded certain.”

“Did you want Maple Hollow sold?”

“No.”

“Did you sign the deed?”

“I signed pages while drugged. I do not know whether that page was among them.”

The answer avoided claiming memory she did not possess.

“Did Gwendolyn lock your bedroom?”

“Yes.”

“Did you ask to leave?”

“Every day.”

“Why did she pour dirty water on you?”

Florence’s voice weakened.

“I spit out the pills.”

The courtroom remained silent.

“She said I behaved like an animal. Then she asked whether mop water tasted better.”

The defense approached carefully.

“You sometimes forgot medication before Gwendolyn helped you.”

“Yes.”

“You accused a neighbor of stealing mail that you later found.”

“Yes.”

“You told Lucas you would remove him from your will.”

“Once.”

“You disliked Gwendolyn.”

“I came to fear her.”

“That was not my question.”

“I disliked her before I feared her.”

The honesty prevented the defense from exposing hidden hostility.

The attorney showed my email about selling the farm.

“Your own son believed sale might be practical.”

“If I chose to leave.”

“Did you tell him about the trust?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“I was afraid he would pressure me.”

“Like Gwendolyn?”

“No. Like a son who thinks solutions are love.”

I felt the sentence from the witness bench.

It was true.

The defense asked whether Florence had hidden the property structure to control me.

“Partly,” she said.

Claire closed her eyes.

Mom continued.

“I wanted Lucas near me. I feared if he knew the farm was limited, he might stop caring about it. Secrecy was my mistake.”

The admission removed Gwendolyn’s strongest emotional argument.

Florence had hidden facts.

She had used inheritance to influence family closeness.

None of that authorized forgery or abuse.

On redirect, the prosecutor asked one question.

“Did your secrecy give Gwendolyn permission to drug you?”

“No.”

“Lock you in a wet bed?”

“No.”

“Force documents before you?”

“No.”

Florence looked toward Gwendolyn.

“I was difficult. I was secretive. I was still a person.”

She left the courtroom exhausted.

Outside, she vomited from stress and returned to Maple Hollow under medical supervision.

Her testimony was complete.

Then the defense announced Gwendolyn would take the stand.
