Chapter 16 - SNOW

Bodie hated snow for two winters.

We did not force skiing.

No inspirational montage.

The first winter after Gretchen, he watched snow through the townhouse window.

Would not go outside.

Fine.

We built indoor forts.

Drank cocoa.

Wore socks.

Second winter:

He stepped onto the porch.

Thirty seconds.

Then inside.

Third:

He made a snowball.

Threw it at me.

Missed.

Laughed.

By eight, he wanted sledding.

I bought too much gear.

He complained.

“Mom.”

“What?”

“I can move.”

“I like insulation.”

“You like bubble wrap.”

Correct.

At the hill, he stood at the top.

Looked down.

Then asked:

“Can I stop if I want?”

“Yes.”

He went anyway.

Came back up screaming:

“Again!”

Healing does not always look solemn.

Sometimes it has a plastic sled and a missing glove.
