Chapter 24 - SILAS’S APOLOGY

Silas contacted me after completing supervision and restitution.
He wanted to apologize.
I agreed to one call.
“I mocked Josephine because Robert rewarded whoever made you feel outside.”
“Yes.”
“I knew the horse mattered.”
“How much?”
“I knew it was Arthur’s prototype. I didn’t know about the key until Robert saw it.”
“So when you said trash?”
“I wanted her to feel like trash.”
The honesty was ugly.
Useful.
“Why?”
“Because Clara’s kids were supposed to inherit more if your branch signed away claims.”
“You were thirty-five.”
“I know.”
“Don’t blame Robert for choosing your mouth.”
“I’m not.”
Good.
He apologized for the Christmas humiliation.
I apologized for throwing the horse into his face.
He laughed once.
“That hurt.”
“I know.”
“No, I mean really hurt.”
“I paid the medical bill.”
“I know.”
We did not become friends.

The call ended.
Accuracy was enough.
