At sixteen, Josephine began formal trust education.
Maya’s successor and an independent fiduciary explained:
The twelve-percent Hearthwood block.
Diversified investments.
Past restitution.
Voting rights.
Tax consequences.
No automatic obligation to work for Hearthwood.
She asked:
“Can Dad take it?”
“No.”
“Laura?”
“No.”
“Grandma Helen?”
“No.”
“Grandpa Robert?”
“No.”
“Hearthwood?”
“Only through transactions you or fiduciaries lawfully approve.”
She nodded.
Then:
“Can I sell it all?”
“Eventually, subject to trust terms and market conditions.”
I expected her to feel powerful.
She looked tired.
“That’s a lot.”
“It is.”
She turned to me.
“Did the horse really have anything to do with this?”
“The key helped prove old records existed.”
“But if the horse had never broken?”
“The law firm copy still existed.”
“So throwing it at Silas didn’t save us.”
“No.”
“Good.”
“Why good?”
“Because you were wrong to do that.”
I laughed.
My daughter had become ruthless in the best way.
