Chapter 18 - REBECCA’S FULL FILE

At forty, I finally read everything Rebecca had collected.

Josephine was seventeen.

She asked to sit with me.

“Are you sure?”

“She was my mom.”

Yes.

Rebecca’s notes were not a master plan.

Mostly questions.

Why is Helen charging trust?

Why does Robert say Bennett has no shares?

Arthur horse / H-17?

Ask Maya.

Tell Bennett after Christmas.

Then illness.

Medical appointments filled the calendar.

The investigation stopped.

Rebecca had not solved the family mystery.

She had noticed enough.

That was all.

One note hurt most:

Bennett avoids money because Robert makes knowledge feel like obligation. Need to tell him without making him feel trapped.

She understood me.

Better than I understood myself.

Josephine read it.

“Did Mom know Grandpa was stealing?”

“Not the full thing.”

“Did she know I had money?”

“She suspected a trust existed.”

“Why didn’t she tell me?”

“You were three.”

“Fair.”

She smiled.

We stored the file.

Not public.

May you like

Not corporate.

Rebecca’s unfinished work belonged to us.
