Chapter 22 - ROBERT MEETS JOSEPHINE

Josephine was eighteen when Robert requested one meeting.
He was eighty-one.
Older.
Slower.
No company office.
No trustee role.
No ability to threaten her distributions.
The power imbalance had changed.
She chose a supervised meeting at Maya’s office.
I waited outside.
Afterward, she told me what she wanted.
Robert said:
“I’m sorry for the horse.”
Josephine answered:
“That wasn’t the worst thing.”
“What was?”
“Making me think I deserved it.”
Robert cried.
She did not rush to comfort him.
He admitted he used Christmas gifts to rank family loyalty.
Admitted charging her trust.
Admitted trying to make me sign.
Then he said:
“I thought if Bennett left Hearthwood, he left us.”
Josephine answered:
“Those aren’t the same thing.”
Arthur would have liked her.
I did not tell her that.
She did not need a dead founder’s approval.
At the end, Robert asked for a hug.
She said no.
He accepted.
Months later, she chose another meeting.
Then another.
A relationship formed.
Limited.
No overnight stays.
No financial discussions without advisers.
No pretending.
Helen saw Josephine more often.

She had changed too, though slower.
Family became optional contact rather than automatic access.
