Chapter 17 - THE HOUSE

I sold the mansion.
Not because it was cursed.
Not revenge.
It was too large.
Too much staff.
Too much history embedded in routines I no longer wanted.
Market price:
$18.4 million.
I bought a smaller house thirty minutes from Tirzah’s school.
Still wealthy.
Still beautiful.
No performative modesty.
Just ours.
Tirzah chose her bedroom.
Purple wall.
Bookshelves.
Window seat.
The kitchen had no locked pantry.
That mattered.
Rosa came with us by choice.
Higher salary.
Direct reporting protections.
She stayed until retirement.
The old Sutton mansion became an embassy residence after sale.
Nothing dramatic.
Furniture moved.
New people cooked.
Buildings do not carry guilt.
I kept one thing.
The wooden stool Tirzah stood on at the sink.
Not as memorial.
Why?
She asked for it.
At nine, she used it to reach flour while baking cookies.
I watched her climb.
No panic.
No command.
No forced dishes afterward.
She washed one bowl voluntarily.
I almost stopped her.
Then realized that would let Gloriana own dishwashing forever.
“Need help?” I asked.
“No.”
She scrubbed.
Rinsed.
Finished.
Then ate two cookies.
May you like
Ordinary.
That was healing.
