Chapter 22 - Claire’s Grave
A month after Francesca visited Claire’s grave, Emery asked to go.
She had been only three when her mother died, and most cemetery visits had been brief.
We went.
No Francesca.
No family group.
Just me and Emery.
She brought no ring.
No horse.
A flower.
She put it down.
“Mom know Grandpa gave shares?”
“I don’t know exactly what she knew.”
“Grandma says Mom made Grandpa.”
“No. Grandma used to think your mom influenced him strongly. The documents showed Grandpa made his own decisions.”
“Mom ask?”
“She told Grandpa she worried people wouldn’t treat you fairly.”
“That true.”
“Yes.”
Then:
“Grandma mean because Mom?”
“Partly she was jealous and angry.”
“Mom dead.”
“Yes.”
“Still mad?”
“People can stay mad at someone who died.”
“Why?”
Good question.
“Because death doesn’t automatically fix feelings.”
Emery thought.
Then:
“I not mad Mom.”
“No.”
“I mad she died.”
That hurt.
“Me too.”
We stood.
No lesson.
Then at home Emery asked Francesca next visit:
“Why you hate Mom?”
Francesca answered:
“I was jealous that your mother could disagree with your dad without losing his love.”
“Daddy love you.”
“Yes.”
“Then dumb.”
Francesca smiled.
“Yes.”
Then:
“I also thought she changed Grandpa’s mind about the company.”
“Did?”
“She made him think about things. But Grandpa decided.”
Good.
No rewriting.
Then Emery said:
“Mom nice?”
Francesca took time.
“She was kind sometimes and very annoying sometimes.”
I laughed from kitchen.
Accurate.
Claire would approve? I don't know. Good.
Then:
“She loved you.”
That Francesca could say.
Emery smiled.
Then they colored.
This was more important than cemetery apologies.
Francesca telling child truth without using dead mother as rival.
Then one conflict.
Francesca wanted to give Emery Claire’s old earrings that had somehow been left at her home after funeral. Were they Claire's property belonging estate? She should have returned earlier. Then Dante's life.
He became stronger leader under oversight.
No need new romance.
Then company considered him for board vice chair.

He was approved.
Francesca proud.

Then I asked:
“Still think A-24 took your future?”
Dante said:
“It changed it.”
“Difference?”
“Apparently.”

Then he joked Emery should vote for him later.
I glared.
“Joke.”
No lobbying.
Then he said:
“I’d rather she become horse doctor.”
Everyone knew pony obsession.
Then Emery finally got riding lessons.
Not a pony.
Paid by me.
Not her trust.
She was thrilled.
Francesca bought helmet with permission.
Good.
Then at stable Emery fell lightly.
No injury.
Got up.
Francesca overreacted.
Wanted instructor fired.
I stopped.
“She’s fine.”
Francesca breathed.
Then apologized to instructor.
Progress under fear.
Then one day Emery said:
“Grandma scared.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“She loves you and sometimes fear makes her controlling.”
“Like Christmas?”
“Yes.”
“Now stop.”
“Mostly.”
Then:
“Daddy too?”
Ouch.
“Yes.”
She knew.
Then:
“Uncle Dante?”
“Yes.”
She laughed.
Whole family exposed.
Then our family therapist? No need.
Then Francesca accepted one thing she had resisted:
Claire’s name on Emery’s school emergency records as deceased parent? Already. Not relevant.
Let's close.
The corporate fight now settled.
Family ties stable enough.
No criminal operational detail.
Then Rafe told me he was taking two-week vacation.
I said no reflexively.
He stared.
I laughed.
“Go.”
“Growth.”
Shut up.
Then he left.
Security function delegated.
House did not burn.
Good.
Then while Rafe away Francesca visited and joked she could stage coup.
I said:
“You’d have to fill out related-party form.”
She left.
Humor replaced threat.

The final four chapters could now close concrete outcomes and provide climax maybe emotional rather than legal. But standing says main conflict active to ch26. We need perhaps still one major unresolved issue: Francesca's attempt to get ring back? Already withdrawn. Could bring final governance vote over whether to dissolve family voting agreement, with her accepting. But conflict is somewhat resolved. Need stronger late climax.
