Chapter 26 - THE LAST CUPCAKE RULE

Leo became an architect specializing in public cultural spaces.
At thirty-four he had a daughter.
Her name was Anna.
At four, Anna attended a family birthday at Cedar House.
History had a sense of humor.
She reached for a cupcake before lunch.
Leo said:
“Ask your mom.”
Anna’s mother, Rebecca Sloan, said:
“Half now. Half after.”
Anna frowned.
“Why?”
“Because lunch is in ten minutes.”
“Can I eat all lunch?”
“You can eat what you’re hungry for.”
“Then whole cupcake?”
“No.”
Leo looked at me.
I was trying not to laugh.
“Mom.”
“What?”
“You’re making the face.”
“What face?”
“The cupcake-history face.”
“I have no such face.”
“You absolutely do.”
Anna took half.
No one slapped her.
No one checked a trust.
No one asked which branch she represented.
A child complained about dessert.
Adults survived.

The most ordinary scene imaginable.
That was victory.
