Chapter 14 - DAVID’S PLEA

David pleaded guilty to unauthorized financial transfer and conspiracy to bypass beneficiary consent.

Not forgery.

Not theft of the whole account.

The prosecutor stated clearly:

No evidence David created the false signature page.

Evidence did show he knew Laura had not directly consented to specific transfers and proceeded anyway.

He accepted.

At sentencing, he said:

“I treated my wife’s likely refusal as a logistical problem.”

The judge asked:

“Why?”

“Because I believed I could replace the money later.”

“Would repayment create consent?”

“No.”

Good.

He received a short custodial sentence partly suspended, probation, restitution, and permanent disqualification from Bennett Crest fiduciary roles.

His cooperation mattered.

So did betrayal.

Custody remained separate.

The family court gradually increased his parenting time as he demonstrated boundaries and stability.

No Evelyn.

No family-office influence.

No asking Leo to choose sides.

He moved into an ordinary townhouse.

Got a job with an unrelated development firm.

Lower salary.

No Bennett crest.

He told me once:

“I spent years thinking the company needed me.”

“And?”

“It replaced me in three weeks.”

That sounded painful.

Healthy too.

Our divorce finalized when Leo was six.

I returned professionally to Laura Vale.

Leo remained Leo Bennett.

I asked whether he wanted to change.

He said:

“Dad is Bennett.”

“Yes.”

“Then I’m Bennett.”

Fine.

A surname was not a conviction.

The marital settlement separated:

My Vale trust.

Leo’s protected rights.

Legitimate marital assets.

David’s lawful Bennett shares.

Restitution.

No one got everything.

Fairness is often less dramatic than revenge.

After court, David asked:

“Do you hate me?”

“No.”

His face changed.

“That’s worse?”

“Maybe.”

“What do you feel?”

“I believe you loved me. I also believe you repeatedly decided love gave you room to bypass my consent.”

He nodded.

“I understand.”

That was enough.

No reconciliation.

May you like

No cruelty.

We had a child to raise.
