Chapter 24 - EVELYN’S LAST MEETING

Leo was twenty-six when he chose to see Evelyn.
Her health was failing.
No one pressured him.
I did not attend.
David did not.
A mediator did.
Leo later told me the conversation.
“Why the cupcake?”
Evelyn cried.
He waited.
Finally:
“Because I had spent years thinking your mother’s branch was taking control from Brenda’s side.”
“I was four.”
“I know.”
“Did you think I knew what twenty-four percent was?”
“No.”
“Then why punish me?”
“I wanted Laura to feel that she could not walk into my family and decide everything.”
Leo said:
“She wasn’t deciding anything. You were.”
Evelyn nodded.
“Yes.”
Then:
“I saw you as part of a fight instead of a child.”
There.
The most accurate sentence.
Leo asked:
“Did you love me?”
Evelyn answered:
“I think I loved family roles more than individual people.”
He appreciated the honesty.
No hug.
No forgiveness declaration.
The meeting ended after twenty-eight minutes.
Evelyn died the following year.
Her lawful estate paid remaining restitution first.
She left Leo a silver cake server.
He stared at it.
Then laughed.
“Of course.”
He sold it.
