Chapter 26 - THE WEDDING WE RETURNED TO

Leo married at thirty-one.

Her name was Anna Morales.

They chose a small botanical garden.

Not Bennett Crest.

Not because the old venue was cursed.

Because Anna loved gardens.

David attended.

Brenda attended.

Mark did not; he had no relationship with Leo and no reason to be invited.

Evelyn was gone.

I wore blue.

No folder of receipts.

No secret account.

Leo and Anna paid part themselves.

Their families contributed fixed gifts disclosed in advance.

A spreadsheet existed.

Leo insisted.

“Trauma?”

“Good budgeting.”

Both.

Before dessert, a four-year-old flower girl reached for a cupcake.

Her mother said:

“Sure.”

The child took two.

Leo saw me watching.

“Mom.”

“I know.”

“Do not cry over cupcakes at my wedding.”

“I’m not.”

“You are.”

Anna laughed.

The flower girl dropped one cupcake on the floor.

Nobody punished her.

A server cleaned it.

Another cupcake appeared.

The entire event lasted five seconds.

That was what ordinary looked like.

No lesson.

No dramatic justice.

Just a child eating dessert.

Later, David and I stood near the garden gate.

“He looks happy,” he said.

“He is.”

“Did you ever think we’d get here?”

“No.”

“Me neither.”

There was no need to discuss what might have happened if David defended Leo that first day.

Alternate lives can become another kind of prison.

We had the one that happened.

We had survived it.
