Chapter 18 - BRENDA COMES BACK
Brenda asked to see Leo after nearly three years.
She had never hit him.
She had failed him.
Different relationship.
I asked Leo.
“Do I have to?”
“No.”
“Will she cry?”
“Probably.”
“That’s annoying.”
He was seven.
He said no.
Brenda accepted it.
A year later, she asked again.
Leo agreed to a short meeting in a therapist’s office.
Brenda brought no gifts.
“I’m sorry I didn’t help you.”
Leo looked at her.
“You were getting married.”
“Yes.”
“Was that why?”
“No. I cared more about keeping everyone calm than doing the right thing.”
“Daddy did that too.”
“Yes.”
He asked:
“Did you know Mom paid?”
“I knew some of her money might be used. I didn’t know everything.”
“Did you ask her?”
“No.”
“That’s bad.”
“Yes.”
The interview ended after fifteen minutes.
Leo agreed to see her again months later.
Their relationship became limited but real.
Brenda rebuilt her life outside Bennett Crest.
She worked in nonprofit event management after disclosing her conviction.
Some employers rejected her.
One hired her under financial controls.
She accepted.
She never remarried quickly.
Years later, Mark married someone else.
Brenda sent a congratulations card.
